Dunkelstein is a small locality in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similar communities, it issued emergency small-change notes — Notgeld — during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria in the later years of World War One and continued well into the early 1920s. The 50 Heller denomination places this squarely in the most common tier of that emergency currency wave, when metallic coins had largely vanished from everyday commerce through hoarding and wartime metal requisitioning.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0136-50 identifies it within the systematic Austrian Notgeld cataloguing framework. Dunkelstein issues are not frequently encountered in dealer stock — small municipal runs had limited print quantities and high attrition rates in actual daily use.
