Deutsch-Wagram is a small market town northeast of Vienna, better known to historians for the 1809 Napoleonic battle than for its paper money. This note is a Notgeld issue — emergency small-change currency printed by hundreds of Austrian municipalities after the First World War, when metal coinage had largely vanished from circulation and the central monetary system was struggling to supply denominations below one Krone.
Franz Schwens was a local Gänserndorf printer, not a specialist banknote house, which is exactly the point: municipal authorities in Lower Austria were improvising with whoever had a press nearby.
