Buchkirchen is a small Upper Austrian village, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austria and Germany after the First World War, when coin shortages — driven by metal hoarding and wartime requisitioning — forced even minor rural municipalities to print their own emergency small change. F. Prietzel of Steyr was a regional printer who handled several such commissions in Upper Austria, keeping production local and costs low.

The designer credit to "Wagner" is unresolved — no first name confirmed, almost certainly a Steyr commercial artist rather than anyone of wider note.
