Berndorf was no ordinary Austrian market town. It was essentially a company town, built and owned by the Krupp family's Austrian subsidiary, Berndorf AG, which manufactured silver-plated cutlery and metalware. The municipality's decision to issue Notgeld in 1920 reflected the acute small-change famine that plagued post-war Austria as the old imperial coinage disappeared from circulation almost overnight.
The Heller denominations from Berndorf are among the more collectible of the Austrian municipal issues, partly due to the town's unusual industrial history. JPR0083a covers the full Berndorf series; the 50 Heller is the mid-denomination of that group.
