One of thousands of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues from the postwar inflation years, this 50 Heller piece from Bergheim — a small parish on the Salzach just north of Salzburg city — was printed in a quantity that seems improbably large for a village of a few hundred residents. The figure of 12,175,000 is almost certainly a cumulative series total rather than individual denomination output, a common point of confusion in Jaksch catalog documentation.
L. Pech designed several Salzburg-region Notgeld issues during this period. The 1920 date places this squarely in the Zerreißprobe of the young First Austrian Republic, when municipal scrip was the only reliable small change in circulation.
