One of hundreds of Austrian municipal emergency notes — Notgeld — issued in the early 1920s when the post-war collapse of the Habsburg economy left small communities without enough coinage for daily transactions. The central government was unable to supply small-denomination coin in adequate quantities, so individual communes, businesses, and savings institutions filled the gap themselves. Bergheim, a small parish just north of Salzburg city, issued this 50 Heller piece under that same pressure.
L. Pech is credited as designer — a name that appears across several Salzburg-region Notgeld issues of this period, suggesting a local commercial artist working to meet sudden regional demand.
