Altenburg bei Perg is a small Upper Austrian municipality, and this 50 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Notgeld issued across Austria and Germany between 1918 and 1922 — a direct consequence of severe coin shortages following the collapse of the Habsburg economy. Municipalities, businesses, and institutions printed their own small-denomination emergency money simply because the central government could not supply enough coinage to keep commerce moving at the local level.

The single signature, Königshofer, almost certainly represents the Bürgermeister or a designated municipal official responsible for authorizing the issue. The JPR0026b suffix indicates this is a variant within the Altenburg series — at least one other version exists.
