Altenberg am Rhein — not to be confused with the better-known Altenberg near Dresden — issued this Notgeld piece during the acute small-change famine that gripped Austrian municipalities in the early postwar years. The central government simply could not produce enough coin to meet local demand, so hundreds of towns and parishes stepped in with their own emergency paper. Haase's Linz operation was one of the regional printers that quietly handled much of Upper Austria's municipal output during this period.
The JPR reference situates this firmly in the Jaksch/Pick Notgeld corpus. The "a" suffix indicates a known variant within the 50 Heller denomination for this issuer — worth checking against any distinguishing print run differences.
