Werfen is a small market town in Salzburg province, and this 50 Heller note is a Notgeld — emergency small change issued by Austrian municipalities during the severe coin shortage that gripped the country after World War I. The central government could not produce enough low-denomination coinage to meet everyday demand, so thousands of towns, villages, and businesses printed their own. Werfen was one of hundreds of Salzburg communities that participated in this decentralized stopgap.

The "b" variant designation in the Jaksch reference typically indicates a color or paper difference from the primary type — worth checking against the "a" issue before cataloging.
