Traisen is a small industrial town on the Traisen river in Lower Austria, best known for its paper mill. This 50 Heller note is a Notgeld issue — emergency small-change scrip produced by Austrian municipalities during the acute coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg economy. By 1920, the Austrian crown was in freefall, hoarding of metal coinage was endemic, and hundreds of municipalities printed their own denominations to keep local commerce moving.
K. Böhm's design credit is uncommon for a town this size — most municipal Notgeld was produced from generic templates.
