Tumeltsham is a village of a few hundred inhabitants in the Innviertel district of Upper Austria, which makes this 50 Heller note one of the more extreme examples of wartime Notgeld fragmentation. During 1920–1921, when the Austrian central monetary system was still in post-imperial disarray, even municipalities of this size were authorized — in practice, compelled — to print their own emergency small-change notes to compensate for the near-total disappearance of coins from circulation.
