Imbach is among the smallest municipalities in Lower Austria ever to have issued notgeld — a village of a few hundred residents whose wartime and immediate postwar isolation from reliable coinage made even a 50 Heller emergency note a practical necessity. These hyper-local issues were produced in enormous variety between 1918 and 1922, driven less by genuine monetary shortage and more by a collector craze that municipal councils quickly learned to exploit for revenue.

The Jaksc catalogue documents the full Austrian notgeld series with a specificity that Pick alone does not cover. This issue falls squarely in the redemption-era window — by 1920, most Austrian Gemeindegeld was already being called in under pressure from the new republican government, which wanted to consolidate currency authority.
