Austrian provincial notgeld from the postwar currency collapse. The national government's inability to supply adequate small change through 1918–1921 forced individual provinces, municipalities, and even private businesses to print their own emergency fractional notes — Salzburg among them. C. u. S. Müller was a local Salzburg printing firm, so this note was designed, printed, and circulated entirely within the province rather than sent to Vienna or abroad for production.

Provincial issues like this were generally demonetized once the central supply stabilized, and most were redeemed and destroyed — surviving examples passed through very few hands.
