Spitz an der Donau is a small wine-producing market town in the Wachau valley, and its 1920 Heller notgeld was issued — like hundreds of similar municipal scrip pieces across Austria — because of a catastrophic small-coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system after 1918. The new Republic had not yet stabilized coin production, leaving towns to bridge the gap themselves.
Austrian Wachau notgeld from this period is among the most locally specific in the German-language world, often designed by regional artists with direct reference to the issuing town. Whether that applies here is not documented in standard references.
