This issue commemorates the 400th anniversary of William of Orange's assassination in Delft on July 10, 1584 — the pistol shot fired by Balthasar Gérard in the stairwell of the Prinsenhof that ended the Dutch revolt's most consequential leader. The Netherlands mint produced this under Beatrix, who had acceded only four years earlier following Juliana's abdication.
Dutch commemorative silver of this period was struck primarily for collectors rather than circulation, and surviving examples in original packaging are common. The real attrition happens to holders removed from sets.
