This issue is one of a long-running Dutch series honoring queens regnant, struck at a moment when Beatrix had been on the throne for a decade following her mother Juliana's abdication in 1980 — a deliberately chosen transfer of power rather than a death, consistent with a Dutch royal tradition of abdications that stretches back through the 20th century. Juliana herself had succeeded Wilhelmina the same way in 1948.
KM#214 was produced as a collector piece from the outset, with circulation strikes never intended.
