The 1982 Dutch-American Friendship issue commemorates the bicentennial of diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and the United States — a relationship dating to 1782, when John Adams secured Dutch recognition of American independence and negotiated a critical loan that helped finance the Continental cause. The Netherlands was the second sovereign nation to formally recognize the new republic, a fact often overshadowed by the French alliance.
Adams spent years working the Dutch banking houses before the States-General finally acted.
