The 50th anniversary of the Netherlands' liberation from German occupation in May 1945 prompted a wave of commemorative issues across Dutch institutions, this coin among them. The liberation itself concluded a brutal final winter — the Hongerwinter of 1944–45 — during which an estimated 20,000 Dutch civilians died of starvation in the occupied western provinces after a failed Allied airborne operation and a subsequent German food blockade.
Queen Beatrix, who was born in 1938 and spent the war years in exile in Canada with the royal family, held particular personal connection to the commemoration.
