De Surinaamsche Bank was a private institution granted sole right of note issue in Suriname, operating under Dutch colonial oversight from its 1865 founding. This long series — spanning nearly two decades — reflects the bank's conservative renewal cycle rather than any monetary disruption. Enschedé in Haarlem handled virtually all Dutch colonial currency printing of this period, and their work for Suriname maintained the high intaglio quality the firm had applied to Netherlands Indies issues.
Watermark security was considered sufficient for a colony with limited counterfeiting infrastructure and a small circulating population.
