| Reverse description | The central field features a stylised decorative motif composed of two abstract bird or fish forms rendered in an interlocking design with flowing linear detail, evoking a modernist or indigenous artistic style. Below the central device, the denomination 50 GUILDERS and the commemorative date range 1975 - 1990 are inscribed in two lines. A peripheral legend in Latin script reads 15 JAAR STAATKUNDIGE ONAFHANKELIJKHEID, running clockwise around the upper and side border, with a bullet point separating the beginning and end of the inscription. The mirror-like proof fields provide strong contrast against the frosted relief of the design elements. |

Suriname's independence from the Netherlands in 1975 came after decades of negotiated transition rather than conflict, and the Dutch departure included a substantial development aid package — roughly 1.5 billion guilders over fifteen years. By the time this coin was struck in 1990, that aid relationship was fracturing badly. A military coup in 1980 had brought Dési Bouterse to power, and the December 1982 murders of fifteen opposition figures caused the Netherlands to suspend most of its aid program entirely.
The anniversary this coin commemorates was, in practice, a deeply troubled one.
