De Surinaamsche Bank was founded in 1865 under a Dutch colonial charter, making 1990 its 125th year of operation — a continuity that survived emancipation, two world wars, and Suriname's independence from the Netherlands in 1975. The commemorative issue was authorized by the Centrale Bank van Suriname, which had itself replaced De Surinaamsche Bank as the national monetary authority following independence, giving this coin an odd institutional quality: a state central bank celebrating the anniversary of the private commercial bank it effectively supplanted.
