The Ältestenrat — the Jewish Council operating under German compulsion — was required to establish an internal currency for the sealed Warsaw Ghetto as part of the Nazi administration's mechanism for controlling and extracting resources from the imprisoned population. These notes, sometimes called "Judenrat money" or "Ghetto money," were not a free monetary instrument. They were a tool of enclosure: residents could not use zlotys outside the wall, and the internal scrip kept wealth trapped within a system the Germans could tax, manipulate, and ultimately liquidate.
The 1943 date places this issue in the final phase — the ghetto uprising began in April of that year, and large-scale deportations to Treblinka had already reduced the population from over 400,000 to roughly 60,000 by the time fighting broke out. Very few notes from this series survived the destruction of the ghetto.
