The Banque Nationale de la République d'Haïti issued this note under Jean-Claude Duvalier's early presidency — his father François ("Papa Doc") had died in April 1971, leaving a nineteen-year-old in nominal control of the state. ABNC had been printing Haitian currency for decades by this point, and the relationship was well established.
The 50 Gourdes denomination sat high in the circulating series for a country where most transactions involved far smaller amounts, making these notes common in government and commercial banking channels rather than everyday retail use.
