| Obverse description | Stylized bust of Prince Johann I of Liechtenstein facing slightly right, rendered in a modern graphic engraving style against a patterned field of dots and vertical lines. The subject is depicted in period costume with a decorative pendant at the collar. The arc legend JOHANN I. FÜRST VON LIECHTENSTEIN curves along the lower left and upper portions of the coin, with the birth and death years 1760 and 1836 inscribed to the left of the portrait. The engravers' names EBERLE and WIKKERINK appear in small lettering at the base of the design. |

In 1806, Napoleon's reorganization of central Europe through the Confederation of the Rhine dissolved the old Holy Roman Empire and, almost incidentally, elevated Liechtenstein from a mere imperial fief to a fully sovereign principality. Johann I, who had spent years navigating the Napoleonic court to secure this status, never actually visited his new sovereign territory — a detail that still quietly embarrasses official histories.
