Djibouti has no meaningful connection to the Tour de France — no stage has ever crossed its territory, no Djiboutian rider has competed in the race, and the nation has no cycling tradition of note. Like dozens of small states and dependent territories, the Banque Centrale de Djibouti issued this coin purely as a numismatic export, a revenue stream that has nothing to do with the issuing country's history or commerce.
The green jersey itself dates to 1953, when the Tour introduced points classification to reward consistent stage finishers rather than overall time leaders.
