This note belongs to the transitional overprint series issued when Burundi severed its monetary ties with Rwanda following the dissolution of the Rwanda-Burundi common currency zone. The Banque de la République du Burundi, established in 1964, needed to assert independent monetary authority quickly, and overprinting existing stock was the expedient solution — new engraved designs took time and foreign contract negotiations that the young republic could not afford to delay.
The overprint series is notorious among collectors for ink adhesion inconsistencies, with the overprint occasionally appearing faint or partially offset on surviving examples.
