| Aanvullende informatie |
Juan de Nova is a small French-administered atoll in the Mozambique Channel, claimed also by Madagascar and Mozambique, whose overlapping territorial disputes have never been resolved. France has administered it continuously since 1897, primarily for its airstrip and the substantial natural gas reserves discovered in surrounding waters. Coins issued under the "Scattered Islands" territories exist outside any conventional monetary system — they circulate nowhere, are struck in limited quantities for the collector market, and derive their legal tender status from a technicality of French overseas territory law.
