The International Year of Planet Earth was a joint initiative between the United Nations and UNESCO running from 2007 to 2009, designed to bridge geoscience research and public policy. Switzerland's participation through a commemorative issue was consistent with its long-standing commitment to UN-affiliated programs — a relationship formalized by Swiss full UN membership only in 2002, notably late for a country hosting so many of its agencies in Geneva.
Swissmint struck this in .900 fine gold rather than the .999 purity used for some later issues, a compositional choice typical of their early 2000s commemorative program before the shift to higher fineness standards.
