Gabon achieved independence from France on August 17, 1960, and this issue was struck to mark that transition — one of several francophone African nations that commissioned gold commemoratives in the same year as part of a broader wave of decolonization across the continent. The French Mint produced these on behalf of the new republic, a dependency that would continue for decades in both monetary and minting arrangements.
Mintage figures for this type were low, and a significant portion of the original striking is believed to have been absorbed into presentation sets rather than general circulation.
