Guinea's 1994 coinage series was issued during a period of sustained economic contraction following decades of catastrophic mismanagement under Sékou Touré's socialist government, which had effectively destroyed the country's monetary credibility by the time of his death in 1984. The franc guinéen itself had to be reintroduced in 1985 after the worthless syli was abandoned — meaning this coin belongs to a currency that was barely a decade old when struck.
