50 Francs Glorieuses

The Glorioso Islands are a French territorial possession administered from Réunion, with a permanent population of roughly a dozen military and meteorological personnel. No currency circulates there. These "50 Francs" pieces are fiscal curiosities — struck not for any transacting public but for the collector market, issued under a jurisdiction that has never had a monetary system of its own. France maintains the islands partly due to their exclusive economic zone in the Mozambique Channel, a matter of ongoing dispute with Madagascar, which continues to formally claim the archipelago.
