Burundi gained independence from Belgian administration in 1962 as a kingdom under Mwami Mwambutsa IV, but a coup in November 1966 — executed by Captain Michel Micombero while the king's son Ntare V was out of the country — abolished the monarchy and declared a republic. This coin marks exactly one year from that moment. Micombero's government issued a series of gold commemoratives almost immediately, a pattern common among newly proclaimed African republics seeking both foreign exchange and international legitimacy through numismatic channels.
