The "type 1933 modifié" designation signals a reworked plate rather than a wholly new design — the Cérès series had been in continuous evolution since its introduction, with modifications addressing concerns about counterfeiting that plagued French small-denomination notes through the 1930s. Serveau handled both design and engraving, an unusual consolidation for Banque de France commissions of the period, with Deloche brought in on the engraving side.
The date range spans the phoney war period, with the April 1940 signature dates falling just weeks before the German breakthrough at Sedan. Notes from the final issues circulated into Occupation-era France alongside Vichy-authorized paper.
