The 1935 Brussels World's Fair — officially the Exposition Universelle et Internationale de Bruxelles — was a significant political moment for Belgium, staged deliberately to project stability and modernism during a period of economic depression gripping much of Europe. Belgium issued commemorative 50-franc pieces in two linguistic versions, French and Dutch, reflecting the country's ongoing and often fractious language politics. The Dutch-text version carries a certain weight beyond the numismatic: Flemish political pressure had been mounting for decades to achieve parity in official state coinage, and bilingual issuance was not casual.
The .680 silver fineness was a Depression-era compromise, lower than earlier Belgian silver standards.
