Mali's 1967 note issue came just six years after independence and only two years after the country had withdrawn from the West African Monetary Union, severing its franc from the CFA zone to pursue a sovereign currency. That experiment ultimately failed — the Malian franc was devalued repeatedly, and Mali re-entered the BFCEAO framework in 1984.
Thomas De La Rue's contract for this series reflects a common pattern among Francophone African states that, despite political distance from France, still sourced security printing from non-French Western firms rather than the Banque de France's own printing house.
