The Comoros franc has been pegged to the French franc — and later the euro — since the islands' monetary arrangement with France was formalized, insulating the currency from the volatility that plagued many post-colonial African economies. The KM#16a designation distinguishes this nickel-plated steel composition from the earlier nickel version (KM#16), a substitution made as raw material costs pushed mints across the franc zone to cheaper planchets through the 1990s and into the 2000s.
