Rwanda's first banknotes were issued in 1960 under Belgian trusteeship, a year before independence — the Banque Nationale du Rwanda itself was a transitional institution, established to manage the monetary separation from the Banque du Congo Belge et du Ruanda-Urundi. This 50 Francs note belongs to that brief window when Rwanda had a named central bank but not yet a sovereign state.
Thomas De La Rue printed the entire inaugural series. The franc denomination was retained only until 1964, when Rwanda introduced the Rwanda franc to replace the shared Ruanda-Urundi franc at par.
