The Caisse Générale de l'État was Luxembourg's state treasury cashier rather than a central bank proper — an unusual arrangement that persisted until the Banque Centrale du Luxembourg was established in 1998. This 50 Francs note was part of the last series the institution ever issued, printed by Bradbury Wilkinson in New Malden, Surrey, whose intaglio work for small European states was among the most technically consistent of any security printer operating in the postwar decades.
Luxembourg's franc was pegged at parity to the Belgian franc throughout this note's circulation life, meaning Belgian notes were equally legal tender — a monetary union dating to 1921 that made purely Luxembourgish paper something of a secondary instrument in daily commerce.
