Hungary's accession to the European Union on May 1, 2004 prompted a commemorative coin program issued by the Hungarian National Bank — this 50 forint piece being among the first official numismatic acknowledgments of that membership. Hungary had submitted its formal application back in 1994, making the decade-long accession process one of the longer among the 2004 enlargement cohort of ten new member states.
