Aruba achieved its separate status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands on January 1, 1986, breaking from the Netherlands Antilles after years of political pressure led primarily by Gilberto François "Betico" Croes. The island had originally sought full independence, but that goal was formally postponed indefinitely in 1994 — two years before this coin was struck — making the word "Independence" in the title something of a diplomatic fiction by the time of issue.
