Kuwait's fils denominations were recoined in stainless steel beginning in the early 2010s largely as a hedge against rising nickel and copper prices that had made the older cupro-nickel issues worth more in raw metal than in face value — a practical problem that had already forced emergency reissues in several Gulf states. The magnetic property is a direct consequence of the stainless steel alloy chosen, useful for automated sorting in banking equipment.
