The magnetic 50 fils was introduced as part of a broader regional shift toward steel-core coinage driven by the sustained rise in nickel prices through the 2000s and early 2010s — the same pressure that pushed mints across the Gulf to reformulate coins that had been struck in solid nickel for decades. The UAE's original 50 fils had circulated largely unchanged since the 1970s federation issues.
KM#16a distinguishes the nickel-plated steel composition from its predecessor, KM#16, struck in solid nickel.
