Kuwait's 1961 coinage — this issue among them — was the first series struck as an independent nation, following the termination of the British protectorate agreement on June 19th of that year. The series was produced at the Royal Mint in London, with designs overseen by the newly established Kuwait Currency Board, which replaced the Indian rupee as the basis of the local monetary system.
The Gulf rupee had circulated in Kuwait until that transition, making 1961 a hard monetary break from the subcontinent's currency zone.
