1959 was the first full year of the Iraqi Republic following the July 1958 coup that overthrew the Hashemite monarchy and ended the reign of Faisal II. The new government moved quickly to redesign the coinage, stripping all royal imagery and issuing a republican series — this 50 fils among them. The transition happened fast enough that the 1959 dated coins represent the earliest expression of republican numismatic identity for Iraq.
The .500 fine silver content was a deliberate step down from earlier Hashemite-era silver standards, reflecting both post-revolution fiscal pressures and a broader regional trend toward reduced silver fineness in subsidiary coinage.
