The Iraq Currency Board was a British-administered body established in 1931 to manage Iraqi currency during the mandate period, and it continued issuing notes well after nominal independence. The 1944 dated issues appeared during wartime, when Iraq was under effective Allied military occupation following the suppression of the Rashid Ali coup and Germany-backed revolt of 1941 — a political reality that shaped every fiscal decision made in Baghdad for the remainder of the decade.
Bradbury Wilkinson printed across a wide range of colonial and mandate currency at their New Malden works during this period. The fils denominations circulated hard in daily trade and suffered accordingly; surviving examples in clean condition are genuinely uncommon.
