Beschrijving voorzijde Central device comprising a large eight-pointed star rendered in an interlaced geometric style, each point adorned with raised oval pellets, occupying the majority of the field. The Arabic legend curving along the upper periphery reads the full official name of the issuing state, with the Latin legend PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF YEMEN arcing along the lower periphery. The overall design reflects traditional Islamic geometric ornamentation.

Aanvullende informatie

The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen — South Yemen — was the Arab world's only Marxist state, established after British withdrawal from Aden in 1967. This coin circulated during a period of Soviet-backed central planning, nationalizations, and a genuine attempt to build socialist infrastructure in one of the poorest territories in the region. The dual denomination — 50 Fils and 1 Dirham simultaneously — reflects the transitional currency system inherited from the Federation of South Arabia, never fully rationalized before the state itself collapsed into civil war in 1986.
