The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen — South Yemen — was the Arab world's only Marxist state, established after British withdrawal from Aden in 1967. This coin circulated during a period of Soviet-backed central planning, nationalizations, and a genuine attempt to build socialist infrastructure in one of the poorest territories in the region. The dual denomination — 50 Fils and 1 Dirham simultaneously — reflects the transitional currency system inherited from the Federation of South Arabia, never fully rationalized before the state itself collapsed into civil war in 1986.
