Ugocsai Világítási Rt. was a regional utility company — a gas or electric lighting concern — operating in Nagyszőllős, a small town in Ugocsa County that would pass from Hungary to Romania and eventually to Czechoslovakia within months of this note's issue. In the chaotic interregnum of 1919, when Hungarian currency supply collapsed amid revolution, counter-revolution, and territorial dismemberment, utility companies, factories, and cooperatives across the collapsing kingdom began issuing their own small-denomination paper tokens to make change where coins had vanished entirely.
