Arad was formally awarded to Romania by the Treaty of Trianon in June 1920, but the administrative and monetary transition was already underway well before that. This 50 Fileri note is a product of that chaotic interval — issued by the municipality itself to address a severe shortage of small-denomination coinage that neither the departing Hungarian system nor the incoming Romanian one had adequately solved. Local emergency issues of this kind were common across the formerly Hungarian territories in 1919–1920, printed cheaply and circulated within tight geographic limits.

The continued use of "Fileri" — the Hungarian subdivision of the Korona — rather than Romanian Bani places this note precisely at the cusp of the changeover.
