Oflag II-C at Woldenberg held Polish officers captured primarily during the September 1939 campaign, and by 1944 the camp had developed a functioning internal economy sophisticated enough to require its own currency. The Kasa Samopomocy — literally the Mutual Aid Fund — issued these notes to manage canteen credit and redistribute Red Cross parcels without the disorder of barter. Pichell, himself a prisoner, designed the series under conditions that made any consistent print quality difficult to guarantee.
The 50 Fenigow is the smallest denomination in the Woldenberg series and consequently the highest-circulation piece — wear is the rule, not the exception.
