Shaanxi (Shensi) Province had no functioning modern mint in 1898, which is precisely why this piece exists only as a pattern. The provincial government was exploring mechanized coinage infrastructure — a project that never materialized. Kann 156 is exceptionally rare in any form, and most examples that surface trace back to a handful of specimens that left China during the treaty-port era.
